Computer Security Quick Fixes

Most people come to this site because they are searching for a solution to a computer security problem.  I get these calls from my corporate clients all the time. It usually boils down to one or two situations.

  1. 1.  The virus checker or Spyware software has announced the discovery of some malware on the computer that it can't deal with because its out of date or the malware has deleted some of its files..... or..

  2. 2.  Your computer is exhibiting unusual behavior such as running dead slow, adding toolbars on its own, or popping up more pop-ups than normal.  You're not sure if its spyware, viruses, worms, or if Windows has lost its way.

The truth is that without an up-to-date virus and spyware checker - all these situations can exhibit some of the same symptoms.  The ideas shown below will point you in the right direction to solve your problem.

Here are the first 4 troubleshooting steps I take.

  • If the computer already has an installed anti virus program - I would use the build in update tool and download the latest updates and then run a complete scan.

  • I'd do the same thing with any available Spyware scanners.

  • I like to run a program like Registry Mechanic or Norton Utilities to check Windows for broken links, lost files, and so on.

  • I run the Windows update service, to get the latest files from MS.  Just open  Internet Explorer, go to tools, windows update and follow the directions there.

I like to run these 4 tasks in the order shown but on an ailing computer, I'll try them all before moving to other techniques.

Notes:

1.  If the anti virus program on the computer is not working or not installed the odds are high that you'll have real difficulty installing a new one from CD.  If the computer has an internet connection, go to Bitdefender.com and look for the SCAN Online button in the lower left.  This is a fully functional free scan which will also remove any malware it finds.

2. If you need a Spyware Scanner, you can still get Ad-Aware SE Personal Edition for free or take a look at AntiSpywareBot for a heavy weight solution.

3. If you need a Utilities program, you can get a free download and tryout the top rated Registry Mechanic program.

I've hardly touched the tip of the proverbial iceberg when it comes to troubleshooting the issues described above.  I cover these in great detail in my Internet Security Tool Kit which is currently off the market being updated for 2007 and beyond.
