How to Protect Your Computer

Protecting Your Computer from Spyware, Viruses, Worms, and all the other malware that's attacking you from the Internet is a combination of common sense and using the correct Internet Security tools for the job.  Your first task is to install effective security software and tools and then to make sure they are set for auto updates.

Components of a Good Computer Security System.

Anti Virus Software - You can hardly go wrong with the big names such as Norton or McAfee.  I also use Panda and Bit Defender frequently.   Note - Don't install dual anti virus programs or you'll kill your computers performance.

Spyware Scanner - PC Magazine has made Spyware Doctor its editors choice a number of times and I have to agree.  It has a number of useful automatic features and seems to catch all the bad guys.  The free Ad-aware Personal SE is also good but its auto scan and update features are disabled leaving it up to you to run manually.

Firewall - Either Software or Hardware - if you've got a high speed connection then use a Linksys or similar router between your computer and the internet - even if you only have one computer.  By following the security setup instructions that come with the router - you'll make your PC virtually invisiable to bots and hackers.   Windows XP and Vista users can also use their built in firewall.  Just open the Security Tool in Control Panel.

Windows Update Service - set for automatic download/you decide when to install.  Windows XP users can open the Security Center in control panel and set this up.

Registry Scanner & Utilities - I'm a fan of Registry Mechanic and I still use an old copy of Norton Utilities .  I also use the Registry and Driver Roll Back features that are built into Windows XP.

Notes:

Security Software Bundles - Yes, you can get anti virus software, spyware checkers, firewalls, and utilities all bundled together from all the major vendors.  It seems to make sense for most people.  The Security Shield 2007 featured on this page is an example of a bundled product.

Annual Updates.  Another key point that many people seem to miss is that most anti virus and spyware software is sold on an annual license basis meaning you have to pay money every year to keep them running and get the updates.

New computers  - often come with 60 or 90 day trial packages which you have to activate to make operational and then upgrade to the annual license at the end of the trail period.
